FAQ:
What is the usual size and medium?
A great size that suits most spaces while still providing impact, is 60 x 90cm. I primarily works in oil paints on stretched, framed canvas.
There is also an option for a charcoal rendering (drawing) on paper - approx 29cm x 35.5cm unframed. Framed approx 45 x 50cm
How much roughly does it cost?
A 60 x 90cm oil portrait, framed starts at $12,000 inc GST and includes at least 2 oil sketches on paper. This would be head & shoulders, and in most cases to the waist. .
A charcoal drawing 29 x 35.5cm framed starts at $5000 inc GST, and includes one compositional sketch.
An oil sketch style of painting 30 x 40cm framed starts at $2000 inc GST - working from photographs (or can quote for a sitting aswell).
Do I need to go to your studio for a sitting?
Although I can work from photos it is always best for at least 1 sitting. So dependant on your location we can arrange a sitting & I’ll do an oil sketch (approx 2hours) and take lots of photographs. If there is significant travel involved I will need to quote, or if you visit Tamworth for the sitting I will hire an appropriate space for a morning or afternoon session (with coffee & cake of course!).
An alternative to a face to face sitting is a zoom call (approx 1 hour) - it’s not ideal however does enable me to view your subtle expressions and study your 3 dimensional form quite well, which is sitll better than photo only.
What other elements affect the total quote?
The size of your artwork - if you prefer a size other than 60 x 90 cm or the specified drawing size (29 x 35.5cm).
The frame - I include framing in the total cost but if you have a specific frame you prefer, I may need to quote a little more.
Travel - when I quote I will include any additional charges regarding travel, and you can let me know whether that suits you, or if you prefer to visit Tamworth (or other specified locations I’ll list on your quote) instead.
Embellishments - generally these are no extra charge, however if your piece has a significant amount of beadwork or gold leaf, or other precious materials (embroidery, silk, Chiyogami paper, etc), your quote will reflect those extras.
Multiple figures - if there is more than one person in the portrait, I will quote accordingly. If there is a beloved pet aswell, this may affect the total.
How long does it take?
An oil painting with hand made embellishments & framing will take approx 2 months.
A charcoal rendering with framing takes approx 3-4 weeks.
An oil sketch portrait with framing takes approx 1-2 weeks.
Note: these lead times may vary based on my availability at the time of your enquiry.
